How to Build Your First Ear Stack
There's no formula for a good ear stack. But there are a few rules of thumb that make the difference between "curated" and "chaotic" and once you know them, it's hard to get it wrong.
Start from the Lobe
Your first piercing is the anchor. This is where you put your statement piece, something with a bit of presence. A classic huggie hoop works perfectly here: close to the lobe, comfortable all day, and it plays nicely with everything above it.
If you're working with a single lobe piercing, don't worry about building a "stack" just yet. One well-chosen hoop or stud, worn with intention, is a perfectly complete look. The stacking comes later, if and when you add piercings.
Layer up by size
The easiest stack is also the most foolproof: biggest piece at the bottom, smallest at the top. If your lobe hoop is 16mm, your mid-ear piece should be 10–12mm, and anything higher should be a micro — a tiny stud or a small flat-back labret.
You don't need to match exactly. The goal is for it to look intentional, not perfect.
Mix textures over metals
Mixing gold and silver is fine, the "don't mix metals" rule is outdated. What matters more is texture. Pair a polished piece with a brushed one, or a plain band with something that has a stone or charm detail.
Three piercings, no stack yet? Start here:
- Lobe 1: A 12–16mm huggie hoop (our Everyday Hoops or a Demi Fine option)
- Lobe 2: A small stud — a micro star, moon or simple stone
- Helix/cartilage: A flat-back labret or micro hoop - Both super comfortable.
That's it. Wear it for a week. Add from there.
The honest truth about stacking
The best stacks are built slowly. Most people who have a ear stack they love have been adding to it for months or years — swapping pieces in and out, finding what sits right in their specific piercings.
Don't feel like you need to buy a full set on day one. Start with two or three pieces you genuinely love, and let it grow from there.
